Classification of Vehicles

Classification of Vehicles

Duty vehicles are characterized by a structurally separated cargo space, permanently separated from the driver's cabin. Depending on the purpose, the size and capacity of the cargo space and its configuration is variable. Manufacturers of duty vehicles within one vehicle model offer several different configurations of height, length and load capacity of the same model. Fig. 1 presents examples of cargo space configurations proposed for the Peugeot Boxer vehicle. This model is currently not available with electric drive, but electric duty vehicles should be expected to be available in various body configurations.

Considering the technical parameters of vehicles operating in the scope of urban logistics, the following types of vehicles could be distinguished:

  1. Light duty vehicles - gross vehicle weight < 3500 kg, small capacity < 5 m3, vehicles used for small transports, correspondence, small packages or vehicles used to transport tools and materials of maintenance works of municipal infrastructure or in the case of providing the services within the city;
  2. Light duty vehicles - Gross Vehicle Weight < 3500 kg, large capacity > 5 m3, the most frequently used vehicles. Wagon and chassis body versions allowing for individual dedicated bodywork. They have a large loading area, up to 17 m3 in the largest body variants. They are perfect for deliveries to small stores and courier, postal services, etc.
  3. Heavy duty vehicles - Gross Vehicle Weight > 3500 kg, large capacity > 10m3, modular body construction. Most often chassis with box body, load volume depends on the type of body. Vehicles used for deliveries to large stores, warehouses and logistics centres. Requires driver’s tachograph and professional driving licence (category C driving license and professional qualifications) and speed limiter up to 90 km/h.
